Filming Feast Of Friends

June 28, 1968
Santa Barbara, California

FILM DATE: 13 OF 28

The Doors are filmed for Feast Of Friends at Santa Barbara City College's La Playa Stadium in Santa Barbara, CA on June 28, 1968.

Only scant portions of this footage have been released to date.

This show is notable in that this appears to be the first concert where Jim Morrison wears his famous embroidered Afghan vest that he would wear at the Hollywood Bowl in a week's time. The vest came from his girlfriend Pamela's clothing boutique, Themis. But Jim's famous concho belt is still nowhere to be seen. He did not start wearing it until the Hollywood Bowl concert on July 5, 1968.

The strong stadium lights throwing lens flares on the screen is what helps distinguish this footage from very similar-looking footage shot the following night in San Diego. Ray also wears a light-colored shirt as opposed to the dark shirt he wears the next night.

You can see Robby Krieger's breath in the shots below because La Playa Stadium is an open air venue by the shore ("la playa" is Spanish for "the beach"). So although it was late June in California, it would have much chillier at night by the sea. Some of this footage was used in The Doors: Live At The Bowl '68 when a close-up of Robby playing slide guitar was needed during "Hello, I Love You."

Meanwhile, Ray Manzarek gets some personal attention from one of two female fans who jumped on stage in the middle of "Light My Fire" that night, according to one newspaper account.
